Head of Events of Africell Freetown Marathon, Abdul Aziz Kamara, said the Marathon was launched on the 9th of November 2022, to promote well-being and health and also to showcase Sierra Leoneans talents. He went on to say that they linked up with Sierra Athletics Association and Street Child, where 523 people showed up for the marathon, which was divided into 3 categories: 5 k, 10 k and the full marathon. He disclosed that 18 winners will win cash prizes.
Mr. Aziz said they are working with Athletics Association and Street Child, as they are now life partners, furthering that Africell is not going to judge, but Sierra Leone Athletics Association and Street Child will be the judges, as they have officials that are on different points and will give the final results. He disclosed that the marathon will start on Sunday at 6:00am and the participants will start at the Atlantic beach. He furthered that the Red Cross will be around to administer first aid treatment for any participant that might develop any problem needing medical attention, as well as fatigue. This move is to ensure that participants are taken care of during the entire exercise.
Marketing Officer of the Sierra Leone Athletics Association, Dominic Moore, said the marathon is a starting point not only in Sierra Leone, but in the sub-region, adding that this is paving the pathway to be recognized internationally, and will showcase upcoming talents, as it is going to be very competitive. He ended up thanking Africell for his involvement.
